Nurse refresher programs

Offered through colleges and health care facilities, nurse refresher courses are designed for registered nurses RNs and licensed practical nurses LPNs who have been out of the field for three years or more. If your nursing license is no longer active, your state board of nursing will require you to take a nurse refresher course in order to return to active status. Many state board of nursing websites also provide a list of nursing refresher courses in their state. However, these days, you may not even have to leave your house to take a refresher course. More and more schools, such as the University of Delaware , are offering online refresher courses for nurses who have been out of the workforce.

State board of nursing websites often list both online and in-person refresher courses. In addition to schools and health care facilities, some professional nursing associations also offer courses for nurses with various levels of experience. When you're ready to get back into the field, embarking on a job search can feel like a monumental task—especially if you've been out of the workforce for a while.

But don't let it make you sweat. Could you use some help taking the first steps? There are three components to the course: 1 self-study modules 2 post-test and 3 clinical preceptorship which must be completed within a two-year time frame.

The modules must be completed before the clinical component is arranged. The NLI does not guarantee that this course of study will meet the requirements in your state. You must contact your state board of nursing to determine if these programs meet the requirements for your state. Each module includes a pre-test, objectives for learning, narrative, and a self-assessment test. A list of recommended supplemental reading is also included.

Modules will require a minimum of two hours to complete, excluding supplemental reading. Upon completion of the self-study modules the post-test may be ordered. Once an application is submitted, the Department of Health and Human Service has up to days to act on any submission. This is important as you must start and complete your LPN Refresher course within 6 months, or within the same calendar year.

Two doses of MMR vaccine given after the 1st birthday and at least one month apart are required of all students born after OR Positive blood tests showing immunity for measles, mumps and rubella. Curriculum All courses are based on Nebraska state requirements and designed to bring up-to-date a learner's knowledge in all aspects of nursing. Course work is divided into modules to facilitate self-paced learning-you learn in a time frame that works for you. A separate 8-hour online IV skills course is included in the course requirements. Students will sign off on IV skills with their clinical skills check-off.

Online resources include Shadow Health that provides nurses with 'pre-hospital' practice scenarios. The clinical component of the LPN Refresher certificate program is comprised of practice and assessment sessions in simulation labs at the College along with actual outpatient clinic scheduling for a total of over 30 hours. Students are supervised throughout the clinical experience by an identified RN preceptor.

Students are organized into small clinical groups to give you individualized attention and support from faculty.
