Are you talking about metroidvanias, where you need to get a new ability to explore more of the map? I can't think of anything that is like what you described. You're mostly only going to find games like that on smartphones.

I tried Shoud of the Avatar, but it's a big and tedious grinding. I ended up reinstalling Two-Worlds II, If you haven't tried it and not afraid of older graphics it definitely scratch my crafting gear itch.
